European Red Lists Assessments

Bees

The European Red List is a review of the status of European species according to IUCN regional Red Listing guidelines. It identifies those species that are threatened with extinction at the regional level, so that appropriate conservation action can be taken to improve their status. This Red List publication summarises results for all described native European bees.

Hoverflies

This European Red List provides a summary of the conservation status of the European species of hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae), evaluated according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria (2012a) and IUCN’s global (IUCN Standards and Petitions Committee, 2022) and regional (IUCN, 2012b) guidelines. It provides the first comprehensive, region-wide assessment of hoverflies, and identifies species threatened with extinction at the European and EU27 Member State levels so that appropriate policy measures and conservation actions can be taken to improve their status, based on the best available evidence.

Moths

Once common throughout Europe, moth populations have been declining over the past few decades due to anthropogenic pressures and environmental degradation. Further research is needed to fully understand the drivers of these changes and to inform effective strategies to conserve European moths and their habitats. As part of this scenario, the European Commission is funding the preparation of the first comprehensive European Red List of Moths to assess the extinction risk of approximately 3,000 European moth species using the IUCN Red List criteria and categories. The assessment - conducted at the pan-European and EU27 level - is coordinated by the IUCN and it will engage species experts from around the continent. This project will be a first step in consolidating data on moths in Europe. The Red List – which will be ready in by April 2024 – will paint a clearer picture of the conservation status of moths in Europe, shedding light on their distribution and on the factors threatening their survival.

Insect taxonomists

The Red List of Insect Taxonomists is a call for collective action to the community of experts: bring your expertise into scope and give your contribution to preserving insect life. The Red List of Insect Taxonomists project will provide: detailed information on the current number, location and profile of insect taxonomists; assessment of the status and future trends of insect taxonomic expertise; recommendations for strengthening the taxonomic expertise in Europe; communication materials designed to improve the understanding among policy makers, stakeholders and the general public of the role of a solid European taxonomic community in tackling the decline of insects.
